Giving Thanks for the Blues - Fall 1999
"Giving Thanks for The Blues" Concert, Fall, 1999 (photos by kenne)

Ten years ago Dale Armet, Sweet Mama Cotton (Marcy Raye), Diunna Greenleaf, A.J. Murphy, Charlie Parker and Kenne Turner got together to discuss the possibility of starting blues organization in Montgomery County, Texas. We decided to do it, naming the organization, Friends of the Blues - Montgomery County and coined the term, FOBulous. For several years we conducted an educational program at Montgomery College, called The Blues Series.

The series is now history, but our love of the Blues remains, now taking on the form of this new blog. All blues lovers are encouraged to contribute and continue supporting the Blues. The worth of this site depends on you!

The header for this site is taken from the photo below of Sweet Mama Cotton and "T 99" Nelson appearing on KPFT's Joe's Roadhouse (Smokin' Joe Montes) at the old Rhythm Room in Houston, Texas.

Thanks for posting the pictures of Ashton. We are really gonna miss him. He enjoyed being a part of our Blues Project and a good friend. His music lives on and spirit will always be part of our lives.

Thanks to Nancy McAfee/KPFT personality, here's further information on Ashton's passing:

Ashton Savoy's daughter, Barbara, called KPFT today to let us know that
Ashton passed away this last Friday night. He died from complications from
diabetes. Services are anticipated to be next Saturday. Please check the
Houston Chronicle.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

While not exactly music related, follow the link to the
info about an Indie movie to be filmed in Marfa and
Houston, with my buddy Mean Gene Kelton in his
acting debut. Yes, a shameless plug for a friend, but
he's a good friend. ;-))

Hey, "Meaner", when's the screening party ??
